nie

folklor

Handamde Gift Ideas for Easter and Spring

egg basket3

Easter is fast approaching and the blossoming Spring around us is a great inspiration for our craft. Here are some handamde gift ideas, which are very suitable for the Season in general and for the Easter celebrations in particular. They can be used as a home decoration (for your table) when you are inviting guests or they can be the perfect and unique, 100% handmade present for your hosts. We all like bringing eggs and goodies when visitng relatives and friends during this season. They can be put in one of these woven paper panniers for a more pleasant surprise:

kurabii kozunak

Or the colorful eggs can be put in a basket, specially designed for this purpose. Here is what we gave as a gift to our friends, when we vistied them last Easter. It  was very well accepted and it still serves them for multiple purposes in their household:

basket1 basket2

You can add to a perfect handmade gift like this one some napkin rings as well. They are made of reused paper as everything else that we do. We have simply reused some old spam paper brochures and we have put some ribbons on them. Here is the result:

basket set 1 basket set 5

These are simple, but artistic napkin rings that will make your table look much batter during the Easter celebrations. And not only. Every time you invite guests, you will be proud to surprise them with something unique. The napkin rings are also a very good present for your hosts, when you are visiting friends. Just imagine how wonderfully our spring baskets will decorate their home, when filled with the handmade napkin rings:

basket set 2 basket set 3

Your guests will be fascinated by your taste and by the environmental attititude that it shows. They will most definitely like the idea of a rich spring table, decorated with woven paper baskets and napkin rings, made of reused paper by hand. This is a nice way to show some style. Apart from that, you will have decorated your home or you will have given presents to your hosts, that have no replica in this world. See these pieces of art:

All of our spring offers are made by rolled paper weaving. It’s a nice technique for getting rid of unnecessary paper (spam letters, brochures, flyers, ad mags, old outputs from your home printer) and turning it into something new, something beautiful, which has many practical implementations in your household. This is how resued printed documents from our home printer look like:

Mountain Stone Bag

P1230310

The ”Mountain Stone” bag looks like a heavy rock, which has been brought down from the mountains, but it actually weighs less than a kilo. Dimensions are, as follows: 27 x 22 x 17 (centimeters). It has been sculptured and designed by hand, using a special technique, which is our own invention and we are very proud of it.

P1230311

It is much like paper mashing, but using different materials in a more complex way. There are several stages of production and multiple layers. Fortified by textile strings and plaster for durability. It’s waterproof, due to the acrylic varnish, used to protect the bags’ surfaces both outside and inside. Varnish helps protect them also from scratches.

P1230282

There is a nice application of ghosts, black cats and bats on the inside, created by decoupage. The handle is a textile strip – removable, in case you decide to replace it with another one. You can adjust its length (now 130 cm) according to your height and preferences. The shutter is attached to the front and back by textile bands.

P1230309

The lock is plastic, light and very easy to operate. Many things can be put in this realistic, “Mountain Stone” bag. We recommend using a purse organizer or a soft, knitted hat for convenience.

P1230284

Even Wilma Flintstone and Betty Rubble will envy you for this bag!

The Inspiration, the Challenge and the Results…

or how I started making “stone” bags:

P1220916

Several years ago (I don’t remember how many), I saw this “stone” bag on a shelf in a store in my hometown:

P1220918

I immediately fell in love with it and now it is my loyal companion everywhere I go – at home or abroad. It became an usual part of my attire, no matter of the season or the place. Friends and strangers never get tired asking me: “What is that? Where did you get it from? It’s incredible! Did you make it yourself?” Well, I didn’t. Plus, the shop that I bought it from, does no longer exist.

P1220904

But the challenge was in the last question: “Did you make it yourself?” Couldn’t I try to make something similar? After my last trip to Santorini this summer I finally accepted the challenge.

P1220901

It is a complex, multi-layer process. Forms are sculptured by hand. Every “stone” bag I make is one of a kind, as there is no shape that I use. These are mini sculptures, made of many different materials. Actually, it is my very own production technique, invented especially for this purpose. It is very similar to paper mashing, but apart from paper and glue, I also use: textile, plaster, acrylic paint and water-based varnish. Here are the first results:

P1220900

They are hard as a stone (water resistant and durable, I might add), but not heavier than an ordinary leather purse. If you want one of these, use one of the contacts below. In case you have a specific desire for shape, color or other preferences –

P1220905

We are open for new ideas.  🙂

“Stone” Bag

P1220923

Everywhere you go with this bag, people’s attention will be drawn to it. Strangers will knock on it, in order to see if it’s made of real stone. Friends will ask you: Where did you get this from? Is it heavy? You will attract puzzled looks on the streets, at airports and in train stations. Kids will want to play with it. Men will ask you to lift it, in order to see how heavy it is. Women will envy you.

P1220920

No one will ever have the same bag as you, because it is one and only in this world: totally handmade, unique in shape, made of several different materials, water-resistant, non-flexible, hard as a stone, but not heavier than any leather purse.

P1220908

Size: 23 cm long, 15 cm wide, 20 cm high, the cross-shoulder handle is 120 cm in length. Not your ordinary purse.

WTF is this?

We often recieve e-mails from people browisng our gallery, and asking: “Hey, wtf are these?”

So, let’s explain:

These, obviously, are two cats. They represent our technology (rolled paper weaving) and they also represent us – GG Sisters – our love for handmade art and our even greater love for pets, especially cats. Which naturally leads to the production of cat houses and beds for cаts from recycled paper.

But “the two cat sisters” have a practical purpose, as well. They are, actually, “bottle dresses”, as we call them, or wine containers, in which you can put two bottles of wine
(750 ml each), disguising them as pet-loving-sisters. It’s an original birthday gift and a good souvenir, especially for “wine snobs”.

May be you have friends who collect wine. May be somewhere in the world another person has the same two bottles of wine as they do. But you can be sure that nobody in the world will ever have the same decoration for their two most precious bottles of wine, because we never make one and the same thing again.

If you want these beauties, now is the time to drop us a line.

Spirit of Burgas 2013

spirit

Photo: Didi Andreeva

It was our first time at The Spirit and, which is more important, we were there as participants, not only as guestst, which is another opportunity to say a great Thank You! to the guys and gals from Na Tumno Shops. There were thousands of guests, three different musical stages, tons of artists and performers, different styles, a lot of entertainment, handmade bazaars, musicians, all kinds of positive, cool people and, of course, three days of partying till sunrise on the beach of Burgas. One of the most charming moments was our in-person meeting with popular Bulgarian actress and singer Milenita. We’re both great fans of her music! She was just as charming, as wild, as beautiful, as talented and as down-to earth, as we had expected. Another interesting encounter was with the guy from Dobrich – chef by day, freestyler by night. He was very good at improvising with rhymes, no matter what kind of melody or beat came down from the stage. There were many other interesting people, of course. We made acquaintance with a very positive Italian guy in a wheelchair who spoke fluent Bulgarian. His daughter Plamena was amazing too! There were sexy “police women” trying to “arrest” innocent guys, in order to take pictures with them. We met Dub FX and we took pictures with him. We saved a cat from a tree. Our landlady insisted on having only one bath per day. A second bath was not included in the price, but we also discovered that one can easily spend the night in a hammok, under the night sky, especially in good company (with hammoks). People were impressed by our colourful exhibition of handmade gifts. We gathered a lot of positive feedback! We had the chance to demonstrate our rainsticks as well, but it didn’t rain, just as we had promised. 🙂 The other handamde artists were amazing too! Here are Vessy and Emo. Vessy tatooted our GGSisters’ logo on our hands, which can be seen in the picture above, and Emo is the guy from “Pimp” –  a very popular brand among Bulgarian hiphoppers. Here is Antonia from Varna with her special handmade bags. Here is Cherry Cat with her wonderful jewellery. Another “neighbor” of ours was the very sweet girl from Cyrly Handmade Art Studio. We didn’t mention a lot of people, of course. There were many wonderful, unique and interesting handmade artists at this year’s Spirit, but these are the only ones that we could take pictures of. The Green Peace guys draw the attention with their campaign for saving Arctica from the oil drilling industry. The sexy girls from the “Police” were constatntly “on the hunt for single guys” while Durex were giving away condoms for free to everybody. Just in case. It was noisy and overcrowded, but that’s why you go to Festivals like these. Parties were great! We spent both nights on the beach, going to bed long after sunrise. We gave TV interviews again. Reporters from different massmedia took pictures of our stuff. As a result from everything shared above, we are a little tired now, may be even exhausted, but this is a kind of exhaustion that we recommend to everybody! It is time for a peaceful relaxation somewhere on a deserted beach. Thanks a lot to Didi Andreeva for the nice (and professional) photos that she sent us after the festival was over.

spirit
